Serving in God’s kingdom of Haiti was such a blessing. Not only because I got to share God’s love with a group of people living in a country where they might sometimes feel lost, but because the people in Haiti were so welcoming of the ‘Americans’. Despite our language barrier and difference in skin color, the Hattians in dirt-road communities where the natural disasters Haiti faced really affected them and they probably don’t usually experience meeting people from a different culture rather than their own. These people, were so welcoming to us.
I got to experience this firsthand on one of our prayer walks during morning ministry. One of the days we went to a different area, where none of us had ever really gone to before. We encountered so many great people and walked for more than what we were planning. There were so many people here we didn’t know where to begin, we then approached a group of guys sitting on the back of a truck, and we prayed for them. Two of the five guys we prayed for decided to join us in our prayer walk, it was the most beautiful thing ever. They did not know much English other than some basic words here and there, but as we continued walking farther into our prayer walk. This group of locals that we had encountered were helping us communicate, and asking the people around if they wanted prayers. Soon it wasn’t just one translator we had, but many. Seeing these people drop what they were doing, talking with their friends to join us around the neighborhood praying really felt as if God was there that very moment. We had a growing crowd of locals, who barely spoke our language following us for the sole purpose of praying on others, just like us. And despite, our differences and limited communication they wanted to share the love of God to their neighbors alongside us.
The people we met on this prayer walk were very loving and wonderful, they would be really happy we came to pray for them and would invite us inside their house. It was a very warm and welcoming feeling having a stranger invite you inside of their house so that one could pray inside, for them. This whole experience was wonderful, and really eye-opening on the way I view God’s kingdom. My week in Haiti showed me how God loves everyone and wants us, his children to work together to spread his love despite of differences in race, language spoken, and place we live. I am so blessed for being able to have experienced this first hand and will continue praying for my new friends in Haiti despite the 3,000 miles between us.
