Micro-Enterprises in Haiti

A need to make a three day trip had Adventures’ contact in Haiti, John, deciding to have the Adventures team stay in a vacant house in Carrefour. The house is located next to a large multi-purpose building. Three young boys who live in rented rooms in the neighboring house thought that they needed to spend hours entertaining the Adventures team. The team enjoyed the boys’ antics as they played in the house’s patio area. The team also spent a good amount of time doing different types of handwork with the boys.

Besides housing renters, the large house next to where the Adventures team stayed in Carrefour also had a large water reservoir out of which they sold water to those living in the area as well as supplying water to the teams’ house. There was a woman at the house who washed clothes for others – such as for the team. One of the three old sewing machines in the patio area of the house fixed a broken belt loop and hemmed a pants. The most interesting micro business at the house is a man who makes small diamond shaped breads to be sold on the street. He uses an old propane gas oven that has no top burners and an old piece of tin to bake the breads. He makes the breads by the hundreds. He made for easy access for the team to have tasty, hot breads for our daily lunches.
